Central Peru: Sightseeing in Lima – Miraflores, Historic Downtown and Barranco

Day 224

We had to leave. Well, we wanted to leave. This coach trip turned out to be actually pretty cool. We went with Cruz del Sur–departed Guayaquil at 3pm and arrived in Lima 28 hours later. Our 2nd floor first row seats offered a superb panoramic view.

Also we crossed from Ecuador to Peru. The 2 stops on either side went fairly smooth. More often than we preferred the coach captain overtook cars and buses you cannot describe in a sane way!

Day 225

Cruising along the Peruvian coast offered a decent dessert and Pacific Ocean view.

The slums and outskirts of Lima looked rough.

We stayed at 151 Hostel & Backpackers – a nice and cozy hostel right in the Miraflores district of Lima.

In the evening we caught up with Amy from London who we’d met in GuatemalaPizza Street food was not impressive–the cats in the local park definitely were. Fufu was the hostel cat. And a very dominant but cute one.

Day 226

This day we spent exploring Lima, which is the capital and largest city of Peru. The city has a population of 7.6 Mio people.

We started our sightseeing spree in Miraflores: Parque Kennedy, church, cats. Then continued to Pachacamac which was an important religious centre before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors.

A crazy bus ride later we found ourselves closer to the historic city center. Here we enjoyed the balconies and colonial extravangance. We gazed at busy Plaza San Martín, enjoyed the Christmas tree on Plaza Mayor, took photos of the Archbishop Palace and Basilica Cathedral. Later on we even went on a tour of Basilica and Convent of San Francisco to check out the fancy catacombs. I actually had a good time and really enjoyed the city.

Day 227

Bordering the Pacific Coast, the Barranco district was today’s primary destination. There we had some awesome vistas and even better seafood at Restaurante Javier.

Walking home bound we walked along the beach and wandered a shopping center.

In the evening hours we took great pleasure in the numerous fountains and light installments at Parque Reserva.

I have to say I like Peruvian food a lot. Particularly the grocery stores offer the best selection I encountered during the entire Latin Americas so far. Baguette! Proper bread buns! Delicious!
